Beyond Borders: Growth Challenges for Emerging Markets

Many of the countries followed in Emergingmktstories are commodity dependent. The policy responses recommended here are wise but extremely difficult to implement politically and socially. The long term solution of course is to reduce dependence on raw materials and move to higher value-added sectors.

iMFdirect - The IMF Blog

By Alexander Culiuc and Kalpana Kochhar

(Versions in EspañolРусский, Português, and 中文)

A number of emerging market economies  have been on a rollercoaster since the U.S. Federal Reserve announced last May the eventual tapering of its asset purchase program. This is another reminder of how susceptible these economies remain to economic conditions outside their borders.

Much of the market movements to date have been short term in nature. But emerging markets know the end-game – interest rates in advanced economies will eventually go up, reducing the cheap external financing they have benefited from until now. And this is not the only external factor weighing on the growth prospects of emerging markets.

Caribbean urged to brace for impact of climate change

caribbeanclimate

A two-week regional training workshop on climate change has started here with a warning that the Caribbean could suffer billions of dollars in losses over the next few years as a result of climate change.

“As a region, we have to assist each other in every conceivable way imaginable,” said Water, Land, Environment and Climate Change Minister Robert Pickersgill at the start of the workshop that is being organised by the Belize-based Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC) in partnership with several regional governments and the Mona campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI).

It is being held under the theme “The use of sector-specific biophysical models in impact and vulnerability assessment in the Caribbean”.

Pickersgill said that Caribbean countries needed to work together to boost technical expertise and infrastructure in order to address the effects of the challenge.

He said global climate change was one of the…

Table 1 shows stock market returns for several markets through December 27, 2013. Several of the regions stock markets posted strong gains, consistent with the MSCI index which rose almost 6% in local currency. The Merval exchange in Argentina was the biggest gainer, up nearly 22% for the quarter driven by big gains by YPF, Tenaris, along with Comercial la Plata and Edenor Ord. The Bovespa in Brazil was down 4.6% as most major issues registered big gains. Mexico and Trinidad & Tobago were also up, with Mexico gaining about 4.5% and Trinidad up less than 1%

Except for Costa Rica, Mexico and Trinidad all currencies covered in this report were down for the quarter and all but Costa Rica and Trinidad were down for the year. Slower GDP growth plus increased inflationary pressures depressed most currencies in Latin America, particularly in Brazil and Argentina. Mexico is proving the exception among the larger countries as it benefits from the US recovery

The African story in the fourth quarter was one of strong stock markets but weak currencies. The MSCI Africa index increased by 3.80% in local currency, compared with the MSCI Emerging markets index which was up .79%. However in dollars the Africa index was virtually unchanged at .33%, though still a bit better than the Emerging Markets Index which was down .23%. All the major stock markets were up in local currency. Nigeria was the big winner gaining over 10% (and almost 10% in dollars). Among smaller markets the West Africa Bourse (WAB) gained almost 13%. Because the Euro-linked CFA franc was strong the West Africa Bourse gained almost 15% in dollars. The Ghana Stock Exchange continued its upward march however the cedi continued to weaken wiping out the gains for dollar based investors. Again the financial sector led the way with Ecobank, UT Financial and Cal Bank Ltd. among the volume leaders. The Nigerian and Kenyan markets were also strong, rising 20% and 19% respectively.

The trend is more pronounced when looking at the full year results. All the major stock markets were in weak currency countries except the WAB. The Ghana cedi continues to decline. The economic fundamentals such as rising inflation and current account deficits continue. The Reserve Bank of South Africa continues a loose monetary stance, weakening the rand. In the current market it is wise to recognize the strong performance of individual listed companies, regardless of the macro conditions that impact national economic indicators.
